Hello, everyone!  Father’s Day is one of the many great things happening in June.  I have only been a father for 13 years, and I still get a pitter-patter in my heart when I hear my son call me Daddy.  When he was younger, “Daddy” usually meant “Come throw the ball with me” or “Come look at this interesting dead thing we found in the yard,” but it’s still always a thrill to me.

Being a father is still one of the most enjoyable, exciting jobs I have ever had.  I do call it a job, because, as I tell my son, my job is to train him to be a respectable, polite, successful young man.  In my eyes, success does not always mean monetary success, it can mean being a productive member of a community, respected for any task he takes on.  This job of father can be hard sometimes, but honestly I couldn’t be more proud of my son.

But I think all men should be a father figure to some little boy.  That does not mean you have to take them all in to your home, it could be something simpler like letting him take a picture with your camera, or helping him tie his shoe.  No matter how much we think our time is worth, we can always stop to give some time to a child - whether they’re yours or not.  Even if it’s just to wave or say “Hi” when they’re passing by in the mall, I wave and say hi to every one of them when they say hi to me.  I think as a man you should always show kindness and respect to others.  And all of that just about sums up my definition of a Dad.

I lost my Dad ten days after my son was born, so at this time of year I think of him.  And I would hope all of us think of our fathers, present and past, as well as all of the other men who we see helping young children turn out to be young men and women.

I was lucky enough to photograph a fund raiser that was held at the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, NJ, last month.  June’s Photo of the Month shows one of the first guests to arrive out of hundreds who enjoyed the Community Interactions, Inc.‘s 6th Annual Signature Event.
