My son says I’m an animal lover, probably because I like all of his friend’s pets. But when I hear the words “animal lover,” it always reminds me more of the people who care more about animals than they do actual people. And I know when they say, “They’re like my babies,” or “my little boy,” or “my children,” it gets to me a little bit but I know it’s really just an expression of love.

Though I know if you leave a dog alone in a park for two or three days, the police are not really going to come to your door - if you leave your child there, whole different scenario.

I know this country has not always had this amazing love affair with animals. When my Mother was a little girl, she was a sharecropper. I would love to see someone walk up to my Grandfather and tell him that his hunting dog was depressed.

They had two types of animals: the ones that worked for them, and the ones that they ate. To this day, my Mother is not comfortable with cats in the house. They belong in the barn, chasing mice away from the corn.

There is one animal that totally fascinates me. It’s the common backyard squirrel. He’s always hustling, he’s always hunting for something, jumping around, fighting with each other. I just happen to like squirrels.

Thinking more about it, I’m more of an animal liker. I’m not one of those people who tries to run over animals when they’re in the road, I do try to slow down. And I do feel sorry whenever I accidentally take a bird out of the air every summer.

So while I’m out at Marsh Creek fishing, and your Rottweiler or Doberman Pinscher or German Shepherd is off the leash and running towards me, don’t yell saying he does not bite. If he’s not eating Alpo through a straw, he bites. …I guess it’s not so much the animals, it’s more the people – it’s those primates that I may have more of a problem with than the other animals.

So, in closing, I just want to say thank you very much for all the people who showed up at my art showing at The Hickman in West Chester over the last few weeks, and all the emails I got saying congratulations and good luck!
