September was my birthday month. It was not a big birthday, it didn’t end in a 5 or a 0. But birthdays do strange things to people. They start thinking of all the things they should be doing at their age, or things that they are going to start doing at this age, they start making resolutions. They treat it like a personal New Year’s Eve. …which it is.

Let me tell you what I do. My goal at New Year’s Eve (which as you all know is my favorite holiday) is the same as it is on my birthday: I want to get to another one.

Like most people, you learn from your mistakes, but still, that’s my same resolution on New Year’s Eve and my birthday year after year after year. Make it to another New Year’s or birthday. I try to do the best I can in the situation I’m in at that time.

Another famous comedian passed away at the beginning of September. I was fortunate to have had a great opportunity to work with Joan Rivers.

One Saturday morning, Harrah’s Casino in Philadelphia called me up asking, “Can you do a meet and greet tonight with Joan Rivers?” They went into a long list of rules and expectations on what she prefers and how she’d like the meet and greet to be done.

A meet and greet is basically where some of the high rollers come out, say hello to Joan Rivers, I photograph it, and move on.

I don’t get nervous on big shoots, I just get more prepared. So I went to Harrah’s extra early. I never carry my back-up camera or back-up flash on me, but I had it with me that night.

I photographed Joan Rivers with about 10 or 15 people. And afterwords, she gestured to me to come over to her. I went over to her, she grabbed my hand and pulled me to her, whispered in my ear, and said, “Thank you so much for getting that s*** done so quickly.”

As a photographer, you get to work with a lot of famous and powerful people. But that quick moment with Joan is definitely going to stay with me.

In closing, fall is back, everybody grab your sweaters.
